Herbal solutions for your dandruff problems

Dandruff, in layman’s terms, is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. Also known as Seborrheic dermatitis, it is a common scalp disorder. Dandruff is believed to be associated with an overgrowth of a fungus commonly found on the skin and scalp, called Pityrosporum ovale. Though it can be difficult to prevent dandruff completely, it can be controlled. With a healthy hair care routine, dandruff can be brought under control. However, it can even be controlled with natural remedies. Natural remedies may take time to show effective results but they can treat the problem completely.

Some of the suggested remedies for eliminating dandruff are as under:

Coconut Oil & Lemon


As we all know, coconut oil is one tried and tested ingredient that can cure dandruff and also make your hair stay stronger. Coconut oil, when mixed with lemon juice, multiplies the benefits. Coconut oil helps eliminate dandruff due to its anti-fungal properties.

Take some coconut oil and mix half the amount of lemon juice in it.

  1. Rub it on your scalp and massage for a few minutes.
  2. Wash your hair after at least 20 minutes.
  3. Follow this remedy two to three times a week.


Olive Oil


There are two ways in which olive oil can cure dandruff. One, olive oil prevents the dry scalp from flaking by moisturising those areas. And two, olive oil can soak into the thick areas of the scalp which causes incessant dandruff problems.

Every day, before going to bed gently massage your scalp with lukewarm, olive oil.

  1. The next morning, cleanse your hair with a mild shampoo.
  2. Don’t forget to cover your head with a cotton wrap (so that your oily hair doesn’t attract dust).
  3. Make sure that the olive oil is lukewarm and not too hot.


Aloe Vera


Aloe Vera comprises of natural antiseptic and fungicidal properties. This eminence of Aloe Vera helps it act as an exfoliant by removing the dead skin so that it doesn’t appear later as dandruff. Aloe Vera soothes and heals the scalp along with cleaning it. This makes it a perfect home remedy for dandruff.

  1. Before taking a shower, apply fresh aloe vera juice or aloe vera gel in your hair a few minutes before taking the shower. After that, wash your hair with a mild shampoo.
  2. This remedy should be repeated at least twice a day.




Henna is widely used in treating many hair problems, including dandruff. Henna has the powerful ability to bind to the keratin in the hair, which relieves one from scalp irritation by creating a protective layer around it. Due to this, henna reduces dandruff.


  1. In a cup, take a teaspoon of henna.
  2. Take equal amounts of tea powder, amla, lemon juice and hair oil to the henna in the cup and stir well.
  3. Apply to the scalp and wash it with a gentle shampoo.


Get Some Sun


It has been found out that the severity of dandruff is lessened when the affected person spent more time in the Sun. A little time outside in the Sun, say 10-15 minutes every day, makes for a happier and healthier human overall. Getting some Sun is probably one of the most straightforward home remedies you can try. But make sure you limit your time though- too much Sun and its UV rays can be harmful to your hair, skin and eventually health.



Eat Healthy


Lastly, eating healthy helps every aspect of your well-being. Diet is truly important to our health, so it comes as no surprise that it would have some impact on skin conditions, including dandruff. It is common knowledge that extremely fatty/unhealthy food should be avoided. So, here’s a list of some of the foods you should consume to get rid of those unwanted white flakes and keep them from coming back.


Veggies: Having green leafy vegetables impacts how our skin behaves. It results in healthy hair, skin and nail growth. So go for vegetables like broccoli, kale and lettuce and see the difference yourself!


Fish Oils: Fish oils make a significant difference in the overall make-up of your skin. Taking fish oil supplements will not only cure your dandruff, but can also help to lessen its severity.


Lean Proteins: Aim for fish and non-meat proteins such as eggs, nuts and beans to minimize the dandruff. They help in the healthy building of hair and skin.
